Physical not social isolation!
So at the beginning of week 3 of lock down some of us (myself included) are in danger of feeling somewhat detached from the outside world. The reality is although we are required to physically isolate we do not have to cut ourselves off from all forms of social interaction. At the moment we live in a world where we have more options to be connected than ever before so here are some suggestions if you’re feeling little cut off!
Connect with friends and family over video messaging…
It can be tempting to rely on messaging services like What’s App, Instagram or Facebook to keep in touch but this doesn’t really go far enough. Research published in the Journal of Psychosocial Research found that compared to instant messages and audio chat those who used video chat experienced greater bonding with friends. If you’re missing hanging out with those you care about try one of the many video chat options like: Zoom, FaceTime, Facebook Messenger, What’s App or Skype.
Check out some online courses and events
There are currently many free courses and events on offer for those wishing to expand their horizons. Some are interactive and offered over zoom. Take a look at these options:
If you’re wanting to learn a new skill
If music is your thing:
THE MET OPERA IS NOW STREAMING FOR FREE
Or there is free broadway theatre:
Or if you’re more after the festival vibe:
Try a live gym class
Whether yoga/pilates, HIIT or body balance is your thing take a look at this article on some of the free classes on offer.
I can also highly recommend the online classes offered by LANO yoga. They are free to access or the studio are taking a small subscription for those that can afford it:
There are plenty of other options from live life drawing classes, cooking classes to music lessons over zoom. Have a look around and you may be surprised at how much is available to you.
Finally some have said they’ve really benefited from having a daily routine. You may want to think about having a set time for exercise, learning or social stuff. It sounds a bit regimented but there are many reported benefits of having a set routine both in terms of mental health and productivity.
Whilst this time is taking some adjustment for us all, perhaps it could also be an opportunity to explore some new avenues. Keep me posted with how you get on!
